I wouldn't say that to Joe Frazier as he made a living off hooks.

 But the problem with hooks is you have to get in close enough to throw them
and that's hard to do with a good jab peppering you in the face. Hooks are
close to medium range punches and straight punches are for medium to long
range fighting.
A guy that depends entirely on hooks is at a disadvantage unless he is good
at slipping punches and getting in close - so yes a good straight puncher
will *generally* beat a good ***.
