Dempsey never said that...  The question of a "bolt" was brought up by
Jess Willard himself.  He claimed Dempsey held a bolt in his right glove
during their fight.  Willard made this bogus claim in the 1960's for
something like $5000... He sold the story to a sportswriter.  Dempsey's
manager Doc Kearns claimed that they wrapped Dempsey's fists in plaster of
Paris before that fight.... Actually, this was written in a diary found
after Kearns died.  Apparently Kearns was planning to sell his "story" for
$20 000 dollars.   In reality, both stories are false.  Dempsey's gloves
were removed in the ring after the fight, and everyone would have noticed
if something "wasn't on the square".

Dempsey's statement that "he did what he was told" was in regards to the
constant agressive acts of self-promotion that Kearn's made him do (like
following Jess Willard to every public appearance and insulting him).

I know where you picked up that quote.  It was said by a british
sportswriter who co-hosted a sports illustrated tape with Mike Tyson (it
was called "Tyson & the Heavyweights").  That was simply a case of a quote
being totally taken out of context.

Thanks, I am glad somebody knows the real story, or as much as we will
ever learn.
