Colonal Bob not doing a bad job tonight

Post by Ryan Wiss » Sun, 23 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I'm sitting here watching the fights, and I have to say that Bob
Sheridan is going a MUCH better job IMO then he usually does calling the
fights. I've only been watching tonight's bouts since the 10th round of
the Montell Griffin fight, but I can tell right away that Sheridan and
Czyz seem to work pretty well together.
Sheridan usually annoys the hell out of me when I listen to him calling
a fight, but tonight he's doing a pretty good job.

I was kind of suprised also. When I've watched him in the past and on the
DirectTV cards,he usually annoys the hell out of me also,in particular the way
he always seems to kiss Don King's Ass every other sentence.Last night,he
seemed to be in sync with Czyz, who's usually the only one of the Showtime crew
worth listening to...maybe Sheridan did better because he wasn't stuck with
Carl King<g>.

Well, I don't know how he usually does, but IMO he's not much more than a
big tub of country lard.  Before I even saw him or knew who it was, I was
wondering, "Who is this person introducing the show speaking in a halting
manner."  I think the guy cannot even read a statement without pausing on a
regular basis, and he does it in what are IMO inappropriate points of a
sentence.  He's horrible.  I had little to no interest in Griffen-WHO EVER
THE *** IT WAS, and went and read the paper and a travel guide to Peru
(hopefully my next destination) after a few rounds.

I came back an hour or so later expecting the broadcast to be over, and they
were just starting the Golota-'Roadie' mismatch.  At the end, what tubbie
say, "Another night of fine boxing" or something to that effect?

I'd only had the displeasure of see/hearing him once before and maybe he
wasn't as bad as he was before or usually is, but is that how you'd want to
be measured?  "He's not as bad as he used to be"

Ryan, maybe he seemed less annoying to you was more from what you ingested
than what you were hearing.  ;->

The three announcers looked like they had all just finished a huge meal
when I tuned in.  The funny part was they were calling the fighters
"butter bean" and "jellyroll" in their analysis'. They should have put
Steve Albert's rug on the Colonel.  BTW, how many times did the Col.
mention poor Steve's loss?

More than he had to.  Once, IMO, would have been enough.

I have seen Col. Bob at his best and at his worst and last night was not
his best. I guess I have to defend him by saying that he was called in
at the last moment to sub for Albert. He was not able to attend the
press interviews with the fighters the day before, so overall he did
okay.
The only obvious lie i heard the colonel say was that he works for
Showtime's overseas broadcasts -- b.s., he works for Kingvision and is
Don's little ***! Have you ever had the his pleasure of hearing him
calling a fight with Carl King? Oh God!
I once say Col. Bob put down the mike, get up and scream advice to Larry
Donald in the ring!
However, ask yourself this -- would you have rather of had the normal
showtime crew? I would not.

I have seen Col. Bob at his best and at his worst and last night was not
his best.

=It was far from his worst though.=

I guess I have to defend him by saying that he was called in at the last
moment to sub for Albert. He was not able to attend the press interviews
with the fighters the day before, so overall he did okay.

=Agreed.=

The only obvious lie i heard the colonel say was that he works for
Showtime's overseas broadcasts

=Bob has never been one to hesitate the b.s.=

-- b.s., he works for Kingvision and is Don's little ***!

=I cant argue with that, even if it is a bit harsh of a statement, I
aint argueing with ya=

Have you ever had the his pleasure of hearing him calling a fight with
Carl King? Oh God!

=I second that. Colonal Bob is at his WORST when he's calling fights on
the DirecTV shows.
I usually dont complain too much about those cards, because I'm just
happy to have boxing on TV at all. But on alot of those DirecTV shows,
Bob gets SOOOO annoying to listen to. He talks a little bit too much (I
think the guy likes the sound of his own voice) and he sometimes calls
fights as if he thinks the people watching at home are idiots and dont
know shit about boxing. I take that a little bit as a dis, 'cause Bob
aint no ***ing rocket scientist himself. But last night I was
pleasantly surprised by how listenable the Colonal was (overall) last
night. He worked really well with the Showtime crew.=

I once say Col. Bob put down the mike, get up and scream advice to Larry
Donald in the ring!

=I remember that. That was VERY unprofessional of Bob. But it wasnt like
he was gonna get in trouble for it. And it's often Donald's fights that
stink out those DirecTV cards!=

However, ask yourself this -- would you have rather of had the normal
showtime crew?
I would not.
Kyle

=Agreed. Actually, I was thinking that Showtime should replace Albert
with Sheridan. He works pretty well with Czyz and Pacheco, and I dont
think that Sheridan has ever worked with Czyz and Pacheco in the past,
that I can remember.
I dont have anything against Albert, but I think replacing him with
Sheridan would be an upgrade. You gotta admit that the Showtime crew
with Albert is pretty lame. No chemistry with this team IMO.=

i personally think showtime should replace albert with the guy who did color
commentary with pacheco for the showtime hopkins-mercado I fight (which also
had liles-nunn)...he did a good job. with his color commentary, pacheco
actually looked competent next to him. you HAVE to have chemistry to make
pacheco seem coherent.

i think the guy's name is sam smith.....as for the colonel, he can stick to the
kingvision/directv/foreign telecasts.

I feel bad for the int'l people who have to listen to that guy.  I
would just turn the volume down if I had to listen to that guy.
