Are Boxers All Brawn And No Brain?

Post by Brown Sug » Tue, 15 Oct 2002 19:01:14

I recently read somewhere that Bonecrusher Smith is the only known
boxing champ with a college degree. I was kinda shocked because I
always thought Ali had some college degree, and I also heard that
Tyson got a doctorate in philosophy whilst doing time at the
University of hard-knocks. There are claims that the Klito brothers
have doctorates but that seems more like propaganda than reality.

If it is true that 'Bone is the only fighter wit' a college degree,
then it somehow re-enforces the myth that boxers are all brawn and no
brain.

Even if Ali has no college degree, he still comes across very
intelligent to me. Holyfield also seems very articulate and a***
with issues. Education and intelligence are not the same.

Considering most boxers are active during the years that a normal person
would be in college, that doesn't surprise me.

Boxers that have some sort of eductaion has been a topic is RSB before.
There were in fact quite a few fighters who are.

Bonecrusher Smith is the only AMERICAN HEAVYweight champ with a college
degree.

Klitschko-brothers most definitely have doctorates out of State University
of Ukraine in Kiev. The international status of that university as well as
global-acceptability of their doctorates (in sports philosophy, mental
training or something similar IIRC) is open to discussion, but these
doctorates more than just propaganda even if it doesn't make them
Nobel-candidates ;-)

But of course there is lower-level fighters with higher degrees of
education. My friend Tom Heiskanen who was a national level amateur in
Finland for most of 80's and then put together a modest 6-1 pro career, did
turn to studies after retiring boxing and did an MBA in accounting in
following few years. That's just a lone quick example.

Falling for some propaganda yourself here. A college degree does not equal
intelligence OR learning. Keep in mind that if boxers were in a
socio-economic position to get these degrees, they'd likely not try to make
a living boxing.

In pounds or kilos? :)

Seriously, the Klitschkos are on German TV very frequently and I have
never seen any of them saying something stupid or classless. They always
act like gentlemen, never belittle their opponents and come across as
highly intelligent individuals. And that even though German is a foreign
language to them.

Vitali recently played a chess match against world champion Wladimir
Kramnik (who currently beats the shit out of Deep Fritz). Sure, it was
far from a title fight, but they don't just accept any schmuck as
opponent for Kramnik, even in simultaneous exhibitions. You actually
have to be a pretty good chess player to make it to these events.

By the way, Lewis prides himself on his chess playing abilities all the
time, but he hasn't accepted the challenge from the Klitschko brothers.
Vitali proposed to do two fights, one on the board and the rematch in
the ring. I found this idea interesting, but Lewis is ducking him.

Paul, that isn't necessarily true any more.  HW prospect
DaVarryl Williamson has a Masters degree but chooses to fight;
England's Audley Harrison graduated with a degree; and there are more.

IIRC, he washed out playing college basketball before turning to boxing.  Never
got the degree.

Ali had a IQ of 87 which is not considered intelligent

Bingo!!! I have a University degree and i agree with that last line. You meet
many people with an Education who are idiots and those that do not that are
very intelligence. I think an "Education" is really a state of mind that
usually derives from the frequent asking of the question "why?" in combination
with a realization of one's own ignorance and frequent stupidity. An education
frequently results in arrogance and once that arrives one's ability to learn is
pretty well done.

Yes but he was a) largely trying to fail so as to avoid the draft and b) How
well do IQ tests really measure intelligence when they avoid EQ which is just
as relevent. c) Street smarts (which Ali had alot of) can take you a hell of a
long way.

Mel,

The key is 'prospect'. Let's see if they have the desire to do what it takes
to make it high up or even to the top given that they have attractive
alternatives. Also no rule exists without exceptions.
