My son Greg dropped seven in a tournament a few weeks back, even
managed to get out from there. :)

Maybe I should try doing that more often. I feel pretty good about getting out
from that spot too!

Balls on break in 9-ball

I was playing a tourney one night and someone started a winner take all
break contest.  Format was three breaks a piece, 1 pt per ball 3 for the
nine.  When everyone had finished 3 of us were tied with nine points a
piece, so we went to sudden death. One rack each, high score takes the pot.
The first guy scratched and he was out.  The other guy and I tied for five
more racks.  On the sixth rack I dropped seven balls including the nine.  By
this time I had to use the restroom before I started sprinkling from my
ears.  When I returned the only ball on the table was the duece and they
were paying the other guy.  Talk about a freak of nature.  I wouldn't have
believed it if my best friend hadn't been watching when it happened, and I'm
still not sure he wasn't bought.  I'm more upset that I missed it than that
I lost, it must have been an awesome site.  I knew something spectacular had
happened from all the hooting, but who would imagine?

Actually, I have heard of several instances (at least three, anyway) that a
person dropped 6 or 7 on the break and could NOT get out from there.  After
the break they were hooked behind one of the remaining balls and could not
even get a good hit.

But this is second hand information.  I have never witnessed it firsthand.

In a tournament in Ohio I saw gary Spaeth make 7 balls on the break against
paul Bowman, But he was hooked on the 9-ball and had to kick at the other
ball.  It was probably the best break I have ever seen in a tournament
situation.

who in their right mind would walk away from the table before the challenge
was finished?
I don't know if I would trust even my best friend under those conditions!
Nothing personal, mind you.  By the way - my high break was 4 balls.

Yesterday I made three. Judging from this thread, that's nothing
special, but it was fun for me: I'm an utter newbie, and that break was
maybe the 10th nine-ball break of my entire life.

The m***of this story?

A: Making three on the break is a very inspirational experience. I've
resolved to practice breaking over and over until it happens again.
(I'll probably be at it a long time.)

B: Slow-motion video of pros shooting break shots is also an
inspirational experience. Fortunately, my VCR can provide this, even
though ESPN doesn't.

I've made six on three different occassions, never getting out from
there.  Lisciotti says he made seven, and got hooked on the 9.

Thems the breaks...

Balls on break in 9-ball

Post by Brian Ritte » Tue, 05 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Steering this topic to the left and should be starting a new thread, but oh
well...

I've always been an eight ball shooter until this last spring when I took
more to nine and then to 14.1 as well.  From time to time I played nine ball
tourneys though, because thats what all the decent size tourneys with they
better shooters were playing.  It seemed to me that when I wasn't playing as
much my breaks were more solid than they are now.  My cue ball wasn't
controlled as well but I almost always made balls on the break, and quite
often it was two or three.  Now I only make balls about %50 of the time and
rarely do I make more than one ball and invariably there's a cluster on the
foot rail now.  I'm keeping my cue ball in the middle of the table more
often, but the rest of my break seems to be suffering.  It seems like the
breaks that I get the most action on tend to pot balls the least.  Can
anyone offer help??

Balls on break in 9-ball

Post by Siula » Thu, 07 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I consider myself to have a rather strong break and on two occasions I
pocketed 6 balls on a 9 footer. One with quick simonis and tight
pockets, the other had mali and buckets... the killer was niehter time
did I male the nine.

I have however made the nine in 4 in a row... the most I have ever heard
rumors of is 6 in a book of pool stories, any confirmations out there of
that happening?
