European Player- Neils?

Post by Ross Ulme » Thu, 14 Oct 1999 04:00:00

A local pool hall owner told me the following tonight:  A player named
Nils or Neils or Niels came in a to his pool hall last week.  He was looking
for a game and played one of our best shortstops- a former top 30 pro tour
player.  They first had a race to 8 for $200.  Our former pro got to the
table a couple of times and ran out, then lost 8-2.  Then the former pro
agrees to play him a race to 13 for $400.  They get to 4-4, then
Nils/Neils/Niels ran 9 straight racks on him.  The pool hall owner says
Nils/Neils/Niels put the cue ball within a radius the size of a hand the
whole night long.  The one time the cue ball rolled a few inches farther
than planned, Nils/Neils/Niels went over and started squeezing the rail he
had banked off of, seemingly puzzled how this could happen.
Then, this pool hall owner says I have someone to play you, I'll call up
Coltrain (the pool hall is 10 minutes from Raleigh, Coltrain's hometown).
Nils/Neils/Niels says, "Coltrain won't play me."  He also claimed that
Archer wouldn't play him.  The pool owner claims that this Nils/Neils/Niels
is the <<BEST>> player he has seen in his lifetime, and he has played
against Archer and Coltrain, and he had just seen Corey Duel for several
days at the US Open.  He says that Nils/Neils/Niels is definitely stronger
than Corey (?!). He also says the young man was not trying to hide his game,
and seemed to have a real love for the game.
I regret I wasn't there that night.  Sounds like this Nils/Neils/Niels
guy is the real thing, and a class act to boot!

I think he gave the pair of wooden shoes to Chris as a gift.
A lot of Americans still think we walk on those things, and often start
mentioning it. (Like in this thread :o) So if we go abroad, we
sometimes take a small gift with us, for the people we like.

Mario

Could be Niels Feijen... But I slightly doubt Coltrain and Archer would
not play Niels...

Neils was here in Ohio for most of his stay. He Traveled with  a player form
Cleveland. I played him for three hours on a bar table for twenty a rack. I
lost the first five games and he ended up three games ahead. I did not know
who he was and that did have a large effect on the outcome, I did not know
he was as strong as he was and had no fear. I  have seen him play on a nine
footer and my opinion is he is a very good player but not a champion.  The
notion that Archer would not play him, I believe is crazy but I have seen
crazy things. I was told last week he is coming back to the states soon.

European Player- Neils?

I played Nils in Chicago last Spring and I definitely wouldn't be able to
run with him unless it was a foot race.  (I'm not that good though)  I sat
around and watched him play for quite a while.  When he got in the groove
the only thing that came to mind was Archer's play in '97 world
championships.  I could tell that he could easily be one of the best when
he's on, but he doesn't seem to maintain that level of play across long time
spans like Archer, Reyes and Strickland (Ok, I'm ducking) who can play at
the top of their game for a week straight.  I noticed peaks and alleys over
the course of a day.
