Don't quite aim at the second ball.  You should graze the head ball just
a little before you hit the second ball.  The spin you describe is
correct; with this hit you should miss the rest of the pack (unless the
corner ball separates too quickly), hit the foot and side rails with
holdup english, and stop near the side rail with the pack between the
cueball and your pocket.  With a little luck, the other guy won't have a
shot at his own pocket and won't be able to see the balls that you left
near your pocket.

Oh, where are you breaking from?  You should break from the head string
near the side rail.  Perhaps you are breaking from somewhere nearer the
head spot?

What's the proper way to break in one-pocket?  I aim
for the second ball and hit the cue with high right
(if the right pocket is mine).  Is this right way?
I always seem to scratch or leave my opponent a shot.
H-e-l-p!

I once got a guy, who normally plays 3-cushion billiards,
to play me in pool.  This is what he said after I broke
and sunk nothing:  As soon as I figure out what all them
balls are doin' on the table and what those holes are for,
I'm gonna kick you ass.
