Update: PREDATOR SHAFTS

Update: PREDATOR SHAFTS

Post by Wild Chil » Mon, 25 Mar 1996 04:00:00

Several weeks ago I posted my experience with a newly-purchased
Predator shaft fitted to the ***of my 25 year-old Mali
leather=wrapped ***(21+ oz.), which I fondly refer to as my
Kentucky Long Cue.  The first time out I shot some of the best
pool of my life.  Being a typical pool-shooting skeptic, I was
impressed but knew it was a little early to attribute the
success to the shaft.

I have since acquired another Predator for my Schon ***(20
oz.) and surprisingly am playing the best pool I've ever played
with the Schon!

The Schon with its original shaft always seemed a little
inconsistent on long, straight-in shots with "green between" on
a 9-footer.  This seems to have improved tremendously with the
Predator attached.  I'm no pro but it's almost as if the
Predator revealed inconsisitencies in the Schon shaft, perhaps
alignment inconsistencies varying from rotation to rotation (of
the cue) between shots.

To continue, now having several rounds in with each
butt/Predator combination, I am forming the opinion that the
Predator makes one hell of a noticeable difference even for a
mid-level player:

The hit is very sweet (and consistent between butts) but like
no other hit I have experienced.

The better feel (signal) and added confidence was immediately
apparent on the first hits with both.

I am quickly forming the opinion that the shafts are products
that DO improve ones game and ARE NOT another gimmick.  They
will remain my play shafts for both butts.

Following all the praise it is only fair that I list my two
very minor annoyances:

The collar-to-joint fit on the Mali is as if the Pred's
shaft-collar diameter is a few thousandths smaller than the
joint face causing a fit discrepancy that can be seen with the
*** eye but is probably noticeable only to the holder.  The
Pred rep said, "You probably got a shaft spun for a Muecci--the
difference in Meucci and Mali joints is a few thousandths..."

The Schon Pred has what I have to call a VERY sloppy thread-fit
onto the butt.  Once it is tightened up to the ***everything
seems to be OK though.  I have to say it is the sloppiest
thread fit I've EVER seen in a two piece cue.

Just wanted to post this in the interest of info for the group
and the fact I said I would.  I'll probably post one more
(brief) article in a few weeks in a final determination of the
difference the Predators REALLY make.  I'm trying to remain
very objective here.

Please continue with your comments to me regarding this
subject.  I have really appreciated all the feedback and
experience comparisons.
