Force/Infiniti/ Firestone): "We started off the day kind of slow with a
little push in the car. Through the sessions, we've worked it out. Our
people are starting to jell, and it's that combination of people that
are sorting things out."
GREG RAY (No. 11 A.J. Foyt Racing/Harrah's Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone):
"I'm very pleased with the car. In the first session we had a very
aggressive setup, and Airton (Dare) and I had the same problem. A.J.
said it was experimental. So he made some changes, and now the car is
comfortable at both ends. It is a lot different from what I am used to
driving. I have to be more smooth and use more finesse, but it gives you
more room to move around. If I can have that car in traffic I'll be very
happy. I'm very optimistic."
AIRTON DARE (No. 14 Harrah's/A.J. Foyt Racing
Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We're OK because my quick lap I did by
myself; it wasn't in the draft. The car is a lot better than it was in
the last session. We found more grip, and we need to find a little more
AL UNSER JR. (No. 7 Corteco/Bryant Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "The
Corteco/Bryant car is fast. We were able to run very well by ourselves,
so we are looking forward to having a good qualifying run. But drafting
here at Kansas Speedway is crucial, so we concentrated as much on our
practice time as our race setup. This is such a great facility. The
track is wide, which makes for a great race for the fans."
RAUL BOESEL (No. 12 Bradley Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone):
"We're improving. We improved from the first session to the second,
and we're getting used to the car, to the team and working with David
(Cripps). That's the way it's supposed to be. We've improved every time.
We have one more practice before qualifying, but it's great to be back
in the series. Hopefully, this will be for the remainder of the year."
ROBBY McGEHEE (No. 54 Norwalk/Parsons Motorsports
Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We were working on getting a big push out
of the car. It was pushing really bad, especially in Turns 3 and 4. I
thought we'd fixed it, but I went straight into the wall in Turn 4. I
didn't hit hard, but anything at that speed looks hard and does damage.
I'm fine, though."
BILLY BOAT (No. 98 CURB Records Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone)
"Unfortunately it was a short practice session for the CURB Records
team. We were all set to do some full-tank running and see how the setup
was in the car in race trim when we had a fuel-pressure regulator go
bad. The problem takes too long to change, so we are done for the day.
We'll go back and fix it, and we'll be ready to go for practice in the
morning and qualifying tomorrow afternoon."
GEORGE MACK (No. 31 310 Racing G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone): "The last
session went pretty good. We're creeping up on it slowly. We had a very
eventful race at Richmond so just trying to get back to basics now.
After Indy, we're all pretty much, 'Let's go, let's go, let's go.'
Sometimes that can kind of results in some hasty decisions possibly on
my part or anybody's part. So now we're just trying to go back to basics
mainly and just creep up on it because all the tracks that we're going
to go to for the rest of the year, I haven't seen nor ever been to. I'm
kind of handicapped in that respect simply because everybody else had
the chance to practice. They know different quirks of the track and that
kind of thing, and I don't know them until the official practice like
today starts. Same thing will happen at Gateway, Chicago and Kentucky.
It's all a learning experience."
BUDDY LAZIER (No. 91 Coors Light/Life Fitness/Tae Bo/Delta Faucet
Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "This morning went really well for us.
This afternoon, it didn't go so well for us. It's all about, especially
since we're back to a three-day practice, it's all about learning.
We learned something real good this morning and tried something this
afternoon. We'll probably go back to where we were this morning and try
to add on to that. I feel like the track is different than last year.
It has less grip in it because I think the surface has aged. It doesn't
seem like anyone has had any problem with blistering tires. The tires
are perfect. It really looks like a great race coming up."
RICK TREADWAY (No. 55 Sprint Indy Racing G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone):
"It was basically learning the track. I haven't been at this track
before. This was the first time. We had a gearing problem the first
practice session and a couple of other things. We got a lot of things
wrong that we found out, but we're heading the right way now. We got
it underneath our belt, and we have a good baseline for tomorrow. I'm
looking forward to tomorrow."
HELIO CASTRONEVES (No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske
Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "Today gave us the opportunity to run our
race setup and simulate the conditions we'll see on Sunday. Fortunately,
Gil (de Ferran) and I were in the same group so we had the chance to
run together side-by-side. I'm happy with how the car performed, and
the track was getting better as the day went on. Tomorrow morning we're
going to work on our qualifying setup and hopefully we'll be able to put
the Marlboro Team Penske car near the front."
SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone):
"This session, we're just trying to get the car the way it should
be. We made progress each time we've been out. We've been running by
ourselves most of the time, so I really don't know how the car is going
to handle in traffic. It's OK. We're happy with it running by ourselves,
but we need to run in some more traffic and see how it works in those
GIL de FERRAN (No. 6 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone):
"Today our focus was on race setup. We did long runs this afternoon, and
the car is handling well. The test Marlboro Team Penske conducted here
last month (June 18-19) was very useful for us especially given we've
never raced at Kansas Speedway. Overall, we feel like we had a good day,
but it is only Friday. Tomorrow our focus will change to qualifying.
We'll run the car in qualifying trim and see how much speed we can get
out of the car. The high temperatures are definitely taking their toll
on both the drivers and the crew."
FELIPE GIAFFONE (No. 21 Hollywood Mo Nunn Racing G
Force/Chevrolet/Firestone): "We've been doing some long runs just trying
to find the balance a bit. I think for the race we should be all right.
For qualifying, we still don't know."
LAURENT REDON (No. 34 Mi-Jack Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "The first
session we were not very good, so we changed the setup quite a lot. We
changed a few things. It was much better, and hopefully we have a good
car for tomorrow. We still have work to do. On my quick lap, I had a
good tow, so it's not really my time. We're pretty close I think. Right
now, today, we're just trying to have the best car possible for the
race. The race is going to be pretty difficult. I tried a few times to
overtake, and it was not that easy. We're going to see."
JEFF WARD (No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing G
Force/Chevrolet/Firestone): (About spin): "I don't know. I just got
loose in Turns 1 and 2 and then I saved it. I stepped on the gray a
little bit in the marbles, and the back end just came around. We had
sticker tires on it; maybe the temps weren't up or something. Or it
bottomed out maybe in the corner. It's a pretty wide straightaway so I
guided it off the way. No problem, just got to find why the car went so
loose. They didn't see a flat tire, but that's what it felt like."
EDDIE CHEEVER JR. (No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing
Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "Practice was good today, with both Red
Bull cars in the top five. We had to change the balance to get where we
want to be. While I am pleased to see four Infiniti-powered cars in the
top five, I think we can do better with the engine's performance. We are
going to take a look at that tonight. There are definitely two different
setups required for this weekend: one for qualifying and one for the
MARK DISMORE (No. 2 Menards/Johns Manville/Pittsburgh Paints
Dallara/Chevrolet/ Firestone): "We tried some different downforce levels
on the car trying to get an idea for a good setup for the race. I think
we're closing in on that. Hopefully, come Sunday, we'll have a good race
car." (What are your expectations for qualifying?): "I really don't
know. I don't know what to expect for qualifying at this point. We've
got a couple of problems we're trying to solve. If we get those problems
solved, I think we can qualify very well. We're running out of time. We
only have a half-hour session tomorrow morning. The guys will work their
tails off tonight. They always do. We'll just have to show up in the
morning and do our half-hour practice session, and hopefully we got all
of our ducks in a row. There's only one guy ever happy qualifying, and
that is the guy that's the quickest. Everyone else is losers. I'm just
hoping we can qualify up toward the front so that we don't end up like
at Richmond where you're in the middle of the pack. When you're in the
middle of any pack, your odds of touching somebody go up."
ROBBIE BUHL (No. 24 Team Purex/Aventis/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing G
Force/Infiniti/ Firestone): "There's a little more give and take at this
track, than say at Texas or Chicago. The question we're still asking
ourselves is how fast will this car go? We still don't know because I
still haven't been flat out. We're closer than we were this morning, but
we've still got some work to do."
TOMAS SCHECKTER (No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing
Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): (Did you race the circuit on the
PlayStation before coming here?): "Unfortunately, I didn't play it. I
played it before I went to Colorado, and I told myself I'd never play a
PlayStation game after I had that performance at Colorado. The circuit
again is new for me. It's not only that -- it's new that I have to get
the setup right on the car. It's not only for me to adjust and find the
lines and the bad lines, can you run high, can you run low, it's also
to make the car work for me. I still don't think we're there. I need to
go now and sit down with the engineers and work at it. We've still got
our little problems. The thing is, here, we can get tows or we can't get
tows, so you'll see tomorrow in qualifying who really is the quickest
top-three cars and drivers are. I must admit, I got a big tow, as well.
Hopefully we can work on the car and make sure that it is good for
qualifying and good for the race."
RICHIE HEARN (No. 20 BG Products/Sam Schmidt Motorsports Racing Special
Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone): "It ran well today. I struggled pretty
early with the handling of the car. This track is definitely more of
a setup-type track. I just got a good tow at the end there, and I was
able to run. I got behind Scott (Sharp). That's just the way it goes. I
think everyone else is doing the same. I'll take it. We'll just see what
