CHAMPCAR: Simon Pagenaud San Jose recap, Road America preview

Since the beginning of the season, the Team
Australia drivers never ranked beyond the
seventh place on the starting grid. In San Jose
unfortunately, the qualifying sessions reversed
the trend. Whereas Simon just scored the
second best lap, he pushes too hard and spins
around in the corner 6. This incident imposes a
red flag, what cancels the Frenchman's best
performance. He will finally start the race from
the ninth position. But then, other troubles
appear. Whereas Simon is following the leaders
and saves his fuel, he gets crashed in the pitlane
what costs him some precious positions.
Finally, the soft tyres choice at the end of the
race was the wrong one, as their grip quickly
decrease. On the last run, Pagenaud is
struggling with this strategy. Wrongly accused
of having blocked one of his competitors, he is
even penalized and ranks tenth.
Let's prepare now the Road America
rendezvous, where Simon secured the Champ
Car Atlantic title, last season.

Simon Pagenaud :
" San Jose remains the weekend where we
were the quickest on track. Unfortunately, a
couple of small incidents totally transformed our
performance and the result we expected. It
began in the qualifying session when my small
mistake required a red flag and cancelled my
second place (one hundredth from Justin
Wilson's pole position). Racing behind
Sebastien Bourdais, I took pains to save my
fuel. But in the second pit-stop, we were all
surprised when Alex Figge cut short the entry of
the pit-lane. Everybody collided, I had to change
my front wings and my front suspensions were
damaged. The handling of my car has been
altered indeed. A wrong tyre choice at the end of
the race dashed our last hopes. Without
mentioning my 25 sec penalty because I
supposedly blocked Tristan Gommendy. I can't
wait to race in Road America ! "
