admitedly this issue has even flown under the radar for me.  Why in
the *** is guts being showcased in the same international arena with
ultimate.  I mean wouldnt that kinda be like having dodge ball
featured at the world cup soccer event?

Dodge ball and soccer aren't similar enough for that to be a good
analogy.  It's more like having dodge ball featured at the world cup
kickball event.  And there's nothing wrong with that.

ultimate being equevilent to kick ball???  that DOES sound about
right.  But maybe it would be more like kickball at a big soccer
event.....you know, cause they both kick a ball.

Also both dodge ball and kick ball are commonly thought of as mainly
chidrens activities.......so theres another corolation (that ultimate
is unfortunatley lumped with).

I guess i was just building up THAT specific "ultimate" event to be on
the same level as world cup soccer in the minds of most ultimate
players that think of ultimate as an official and legit sport. (which,
imo, definitely has the potential to be).........kickball, dodgeball
and guts......not so much.  which is why its odd that ultimate would
network with guts as apposed to k9 (which gets yearly network tv
coverage) or discgolf.  Of course maybe those sports are shunning ulti
and guts is all thats left.

Guts was the first Disc Sport ever invented, and has for a long time
been part of the worlds for ultimate.  I guess it gets grandfathered
in.

Guts is sweet to watch though, people grabbing 100km/h discs out of
the air with one hand.

I've read about Guts but don't know too much about it, nor have I ever
played. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it anything more than just
chucking a disc at each other from short distances? Sounds like a good
catching drill to test hand speed and reaction time, but as a
competitive sport???

It's a blast to play, and much more than just chucking discs at each
other.

Come check it out at Worlds... I'll be the Canadian ducking from Ryan
Scott's 137km/hr saw-blades.

Mark.

Play Guts, It's Fun!
... oh wait, that's been used...

I just checked out some pictures on a GUTS website.  From the
pictures, it seemed like there were an inordinate number of fat, glove
wearing rednecks playing.  I think a "manzier" is required playing
equipment to keep those giant chesticles from interfering with
catches.

It all kind of reminded me of the Elephant Grave Yard in The Lion
King.  GUTS is where ultimate players go when they are going to die.

"Everything the light touches is our kingdom." - Mufasa
"What about that dark area over there?" - Simba
"That, Simba, is where fat rednecks congregate to do unspeakable
things with a disc.  It is what ultimate would become if no one but
the jeans-wearing, ultra-creepy pickup players were left to rule the
game.  You must never go there." - Mufasa

Not much unlike the comments about ultimate players being hippies and
computer-programming geeks. Must be true.

"GUTS is where ultimate players go when they are going to die."

That's a reasonable assumption, since guts players tend to be fatter
and older than ultimate players. However, there is not much cross over
between ultimate and guts.

I'm  pretty sure guts used to be huge back in the 50's. Don't know
what happened after that.

Also, for those that want to try it, I think downward throws are
illegal, so keep that in mind. There's also a crazy sideways claw grip
those guys use.

Not sure about K-9, but DG is doing very well in and of itself.  It's
the only disc sport (that I know) where if you're good enough, you can
make some serious $$$.  ( http://SportToday.org/
=)

I figure it's similar to the PGA and the Olympics.

As for things 'below the radar', did you know you can throw a disc
from the UPA HQ to the WFDF HQ?  I know, crazy!!

The above mentioned Ryan Scott is playing ultimate in our Summer
League. Quite a fine player.

Most (98%) ultimate players scream, cry, wince, duck, shit themselves
(or do all of the latter) the first (& usually the last) time they
stand on a Guts line ... which explains why many ultimate players will
never pursue actual contacts sports like football, rugby, lacrosse, or
hockey.  Tulips were not born to rumble.

On the other hand ... To make an average Guts player achieve the same
level of muscle fatigue and glycogen depletion as an Ultimate player
after a hefty match usually requires little more than moving his beer
to another chair when he is not looking.  (but god help your paper
arse if he catches you in the act)

Yep, the comparison is inherently difficult to follow or describe....

Step back away from the line, there's no shame in it for the likes of
you.
