Live Stream Criticism

First off, I'm not a hater. I'm really happy that there's
live streaming at nationals. I'm sure a whole lot of work
has gone in to making it happen.

But I keep wondering

Couldn't they test out the stream and fix problems BEFORE
the games start? Did they just assume everything would work
perfectly when they turned the camera on?

It just seems....so obvious. Please tell me why I'm wrong
and oversimplifying.

I'm with you on this one. During the college broadcasts the
streams were turned on 10 minutes before the game started,
and they seemed to be using that dead air time to test out
the stream. Here it seems to be simply getting turned on and
hoping it works.

You are oversimplifying because there is no real way to
accurately test against the significant load they are no
doubt experiencing.

Streaming audio and video becomes more difficult when
thousands (?) of people are hitting your server at the same
time.

On the facebook page they mentioned that the problem with
the audio being out of sync was that the mic and the camera
were recording at different speeds. That doesn't have
anything to do with server load.

I don't want to defend them too much, because things
certainly could have been tested a little better, but even
NHL GameCenter (for which I pay $160/yr) gets the audio out
of sync sometimes. Luckily I can usually watch the other
feed (every game has home and away feeds).

Any defense of the stream's shortcomings related to server
overload stopped being valid after the first or second time.
This should not be a recurring issue.
