Sammy Rises Above the Rest at Lebanon Valley
                         By Richard Day
WEST LEBANON, NY (August 6) - Sammy Swindell came within .030
seconds of recording the second clean sweep of his career Tuesday
when a standing-room-only crowd welcomed the Skoal Outlaw Series
back to Lebanon Valley Speedway.
Swindell, who put together the first clean sweep in World of
Outlaws history at Bridgeport Speedway 364 days before, won the
Second Quaker State Heat Race, earned the right to start the "A"
Feature on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash and led all 25
laps in the main event.
Sammy's eighth victory of the year tied him with Steve Kinser
for second place in the "A" Feature win column. It was the second
victory of Swindell's career at Lebanon Valley.
The only area of the racing program Swindell didn't dominate
was the qualifying session, and it took a record-setting effort
by Dave Blaney to beat him. The 17.198-second trip "The Buckeye
Bullet" made around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval sliced .138
seconds off the one-lap standard Stevie Smith set on June 5,
1995, and was .030 seconds faster than Sammy's best effort.
For the third time in as many nights, Swindell and Skoal
Outlaw Series points leader Mark Kinser staged a race-long battle
for first place.
As Sammy drove his #1 ChannelLock Gambler into the lead at
the drop of the green flag, Kinser raced past Stevie Smith into
third place. Seconds later, Mark took the low line through the
second corner to pass Blaney for the runner-up spot.
The leaders were approaching lapped traffic when Kent Hyatt
took his #4 sprinter for a spin in turn four late in the fourth
lap. Although Mark started right behind him as the green flag
replaced the yellow, Sammy put eight car-lengths between them
within two laps.
Steve Kinser, winner of six World of Outlaws "A" Features at
Lebanon Valley, was battling Smith for fourth place when the
leaders caught the backmarkers during the eighth lap.
They were taken out of lapped traffic the next time around
when Dave Manzolini hit the wall in the second corner and
flipped. With one lapped car separating the leaders, Sammy opened
a 10-car-length advantage within a lap. He caught the backmarkers
again midway through the race.
Mark reeled in Swindell during the 14th lap. But with a quick
move around Rob Hart, Sammy returned to his comfort zone. Three
laps later, however, Mark was challenging for the lead again.
"The Buckeye Bullet" surrendered third place with five laps
remaining when the #10 Vivarin J&J suffered a flat right rear
tire, causing him to hit the outside retaining wall between turns
three and four. The contact with the wall sent the #10 flipping -
right out of the race. Blaney was given credit for 17th-place.
Although a lapped car restarted between the leaders, Mark
kept pace with Sammy as the green flag replaced the red. He was
able to race with the rim-riding Swindell in the corners, but he
couldn't pass him.
Mark made one final attempt to steal the victory in turn four
as they headed for the checkered flag. After clipping the outside
wall with his right rear tire, Swindell steered his #1 toward the
inside groove and beat Mark across the finish line by less than a
car-length.
"We've had pretty good luck up here," Swindell said following
his second victory in the last three events. "I got in a little
trouble late in the race. We put some extra weight in the left
rear, but the car kept bottoming out. We couldn't roll through
the corners very well and that allowed Mark to catch me."
Steve Kinser held off Smith for his second straight third-
place finish. Johnny Herrera came back from a crash in hot laps
to finish fifth, ahead of First Quaker State Heat Race winner
Jeff Swindell, Joe Gaerte, Andy Hillenburg, Lance Blevins and Jim
Carr.
Jac Haudenschild, another hot-lap crash victim, wasn't as
fortunate as Herrera. He allowed the #22 Pennzoil Maxim to hit
the wall between the third and fourth corners. "The Wild Child"
was taken to a nearby hospital for observation and released with
a clean bill of health. WoO
