Young Canadian Formula Ford Drivers
Each young driver was awarded two days of testing at the 1.4-mile road
course courtesy of fellow Canadian Brian Stewart, owner of one of the most
successful teams in PPG-Dayton Indy Lights competition. Since 1991,
Stewart has annually afforded talented Canadians the opportunity to test
his Indy Lights machines. Kerin and Povoledo were selected following the
September 7 Mosport round of the Canadian Formula Ford Championship in
which they placed first and second, respectively. Martel earned his test
after being named the event's "Hard Charger".
"I had a blast," recounted the native of Cobourg, Ontario. "There are very
few individuals like Brian Stewart in the sport, and people should tip
their hats to him for letting Canadian racers test a car under his
guidance." said Kerin: "We were treated so well by the whole team. It was
quite an experience."
Povoledo, runner-up in the 1998 Canadian Formula Ford Championship, was
equally grateful for the chance to drive the powerful Lola T97-20.
"I want to thank Brian Stewart and the whole team for this tremendous
opportunity," said the Toronto resident. "Coming from Formula Ford, the
Indy Lights car is a quantum leap in everything: brakes, acceleration,
weight, steering effort. I had a lot of fun."
Martel, Povoledo's teammate at AIM Autosport, concurred: "I learned a lot,
and it was a great experience. Lots of power!"
Stewart, the 1972 Canadian Formula Ford Champion and a strong supporter of
Canadian racing, remarked: "I'm glad to have given young Canadians the
chance to drive a more powerful car. Hopefully, in the future, Canadian
companies will come forward to help support these racers."
Since 1989, drivers competing for Stewart have earned the 31 Indy Lights
victories, 27 pole positions, and two series championships (1990 and
1991). Graduates of the Brian Stewart Racing "school" include FedEx
Championship Series drivers Bryan Herta, PJ Jones, Gualter Salles,
Cristiano da Matta, and Paul Tracy, who claimed the 1990 Indy Lights
series title while driving for BSR. Current Indy Lights team owner Eric
Bachelart won the 1991 title driving for Stewart.
